1986 & 1988 Xinjiang Daily Articles
Below I have provided scans and transcriptions (yet to be translated) of the Xinjiang Daily articles that were direct responses to the Uyghur student movements of 1985 and 1988. These articles responded to and attempted to refute the students’ grievances and provide a theoretical basis for non-accommodationist policies in Xinjiang. They signify a critical shift away from the thinking behind the more liberal reforms of the early 1980s spearheaded by Hu Yaobang 胡耀邦, which promised greater non-Han autonomy, blamed Han chauvinism for ethnic disunity, and privileged non-Han interests in the regions in which they lived. The eight 1988 articles—what came to be called the “eight theories”—themselves drew from the twelve articles from 1986.
